A CALM WALKTHROUGH

Your court date is a process—not a pop quiz.

You do not need to know courtroom language before you arrive. Here is the usual sequence and the few things worth preparing.

1

Read the ticket carefully

Find the statute, court code, deadline, alleged speed or conduct, and whether the appearance-required box is checked.

2

Choose pay or not guilty

Paying a payable ticket is a guilty plea. A not-guilty plea preserves the opportunity to contest the charge and leads to a court date.

3

Attend the scheduled appearance

The judge explains rights and possible penalties and addresses plea and counsel status. NJ Courts says a trial may take place that day or on another scheduled date.

4

Discuss resolution or prepare

The prosecutor may make an offer, but no amendment or dismissal is guaranteed. You can accept an approved resolution, ask for time, or continue toward trial.

5

Plea, trial, or dismissal

A guilty plea must be accepted by the judge. At trial, the State presents its evidence and you may challenge it and present a defense. The judge decides the case.

6

Complete the court order

Pay fines or follow the approved payment plan, comply with suspension, interlock, program, or community-service requirements, and keep proof of completion.

IF YOUR SESSION IS ON ZOOM

Treat it like a real courtroom.

  • Join using your legal first and last name.
  • Use a quiet, well-lit location with working audio and video.
  • Do not drive, record, eat, smoke, or multitask.
  • Expect a waiting room and private prosecutor breakout room.

IF YOUR SESSION IS IN PERSON

Give yourself breathing room.

  • Use the court address—not necessarily the town hall address.
  • Arrive early for parking, security, and check-in.
  • Bring the ticket, notice, identification, and organized supporting material.
  • Silence your phone and follow court-staff instructions.

A SIMPLE CHECKLIST

Bring clarity, not a suitcase of paper.
